Gillings divorce tussle goes on

HILLSBOROUGH -- One of the Triangle's most prominent couples, Dennis and Joan Gillings, continue to spar over their stake in Quintiles Transnational, the pharmaceutical research company Dennis Gillings founded in 1982.

The Gillingses, who filed for divorce last year after 32 years of marriage, are waging a heated divorce battle inOrange County court.

Her lawyer, Robert Ponton, wrote in a court filing that Dennis Gillings has not submitted documents indicating what can be divided from the pair's Quintiles assets. Ponton has requested a restraining order against Dennis Gillings to "prevent the dissipation, waste or conversion of marital divisible property," according to court records.

"It is unclear whether he produced all documents responsive to the request to other businesses," according to court documents from Jan. 3. Ponton did not return calls seeking comment on Monday.

Wade Smith, the Raleigh lawyer who is representing Dennis Gillings, has denied Ponton's requests to submit the documents and pay Joan Gillings for legal expenses associated with the request, according to court records.

Dennis Gillings' initial divorce motion was thrown out Friday over a disagreement about the couples' date of separation, but a new divorce motion is expected to be re-filed this month.

"His divorce case is not dismissed," Smith said.

Smith said the couple's disagreement over their share in Quintiles will not affect the company or its management.

"We are hopeful that we will resolve this matter peacefully and we will continue to direct all of our efforts towards reaching an amicable resolution to this proceeding," he said. "There is abundant good will in this case for everyone to get it resolved in a confidential and a peaceful way."
